It wasn't over night that Marty went Crazy

So I’ve read a lot of blogs, a lot of comments, a lot of tweets about how Marty being crazy came out of nowhere. But did it really?

I don’t think it was. Now I admit when Marty first came to town I wasn’t watching One Life to Live, however everything I’ve read about her time involved with Rev. Andrew Carpenter and young Billy Douglas were that of a young woman out for revenge after being pushed away. Again, I didn’t see it. I’ve just read about it.

Then Marty was raped by Todd, Zach and Powell. She carried that with her for a very long time. She didn’t just forget about it once the trial was over. She worked to move past this feeling of violation and victimization. Eventually she met Dylan and later Patrick and found herself in a love triangle.

Eventually she chose to be with Patrick, and they were able to ride off into the sunset and be hopefully happy together. Except that Patrick was still involved with the Men of 21 thing. Which led to him being killed while on a phone call with Marty. And apparently she never has asked for his remains?

Now I’m betting that hearing your husband killed while on the phone with him is not going to be something you just will get over in a day, if ever. I’m not even sure Marty ever sought help from someone else because she thought she could handle it herself.

That is when I think she started to fall apart. Patrick was gone, she moved her and Cole back to Llanview. She got involved in that terrible blackmail marriage with Miles leading to the start of Marty back in the victim position. She never really got out of it after that. Then she was declared dead, but yet she was alive and held captive by Todd and we got that awful “rapemance” and the fall out of that.

Then we got the relationship with John McBain, which was destined to fail because as much as he hates to admit it, he loves Natalie and always has. Which Marty thought would last when she was pregnant, again another tragedy was the miscarriage followed by Cole being sent to Prison. Marty started to fall apart. She started to regress back to who she was when she first came back to town. She tried to keep Natalie and John apart. She was slowly losing control of her life, and it snowballed.

It did not come out of nowhere, we’ve been slowly watching it happen for years.

Patrick really was one of the few people that can get through to her. So it’s a good thing that he’s still alive thanks to some secret agency that has coded files no one can crack. Now wherever it is they went, I hope that Patrick will convince her to get whatever help she really needs, for her to own up to what she’s done. A lot of which I don’t think she really realizes she’s done just yet.

I also hope that TrevorTodd tells John McBain about Marty changing the tests (which I so knew she did the second I saw her enter that room), and we can move towards whatever amazing stuff is planned for the final months of One Life to Live.
